DescriptionIf you are trying to read delicate analog sensors with your Arduino, or building a custom battery charger for a summer training program, your analog-to-digital converter is only as accurate as its reference voltage. If your 5V supply line fluctuates, your sensor readings will fluctuate too. The TL431 Precision Voltage Reference solves this by providing a rock-solid, unchanging baseline voltage for your circuits to measure against.Often referred to as a “programmable Zener diode,” this 3-pin TO-92 component is arguably one of the most widely used integrated circuits in the world, sitting at the heart of nearly every modern switch-mode power supply (SMPS).The “Programmable Zener” AdvantageStandard Zener diodes are manufactured for a specific, fixed voltage (like 5.1V or 12V). If you need an obscure reference voltage—say, exactly 3.8V—you are out of luck. The TL431 features a Reference (REF) pin. By connecting a simple two-resistor voltage divider to this pin, you can program the chip to regulate and hold any voltage between 2.5V and 36V. The internal circuitry will automatically adjust its current draw (sinking up to 100mA) to maintain your exact programmed voltage perfectly stable, regardless of temperature changes or input fluctuations. The King of Power Supply FeedbackIf you open up a standard laptop charger, you will almost always find a TL431 sitting right next to an optocoupler (like the PC817). The TL431 constantly monitors the output voltage of the power supply. If the voltage drops too low when you plug in a heavy load, the TL431 signals the optocoupler, which tells the high-voltage side of the circuit to pump more power. It is an incredibly clever, isolated feedback loop!Key Features:Fully Adjustable: Set your precise target voltage using standard resistors.High Thermal Stability: Maintains strict voltage accuracy even as the ambient temperature changes.Low Dynamic Output Impedance: Reacts extremely quickly to sudden changes in circuit current.Breadboard Ready: The standard TO-92 package is perfect for rapid prototyping and educational hardware labs.Technical Specifications:Reference Voltage (Internal): 2.495V (Typical ~2.5V)Programmable Output Voltage: 2.5V to 36V DCSink-Current Capability: 1mA to 100mAReference Input Current: ~2µA to 4µAOutput Impedance: 0.22 Ohms (Typical)Package Type: TO-92 (Through-hole)Pinout Configuration (Flat side facing you, left to right):Reference (REF): Connects to your resistor divider network to set the target voltage.Anode (A): Connects to Ground.Cathode (K): Connects to your positive voltage source (usually through a current-limiting resistor).Ideal Applications:Providing stable analog reference voltages for ESP32 and Arduino ADCsFeedback control loops in isolated Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS)Custom DIY battery chargers and over-voltage protection circuitsCreating precise, non-standard voltage rails (e.g., exactly 3.3V from a 5V source)Precision current limiters and constant-current LED driversDocuments:Datasheet
